Cry Fest In Cedar Hill

I had to read Les Miserables in HS for a literature class and fell in love with the story and the theme of redemption that happens over and again in it in the midst of misery, tragedy, and god knows all the horror that the characters faced. Then the musical came out in the mid-80's and as soon as I had a chance I got hold of the soundtrack. I ( Read more... )

We saw it in 1988 on the first national tour when it came to Lansing, Michigan. I was so emotional by the end of it I could barely walk.

I don't care if I have to beg, borrow, steal or go hungry, I am bound and determined to see this on stage in person sometime. It will have a lot to live up to to compare with this concert version though...

Alfie Boe was such a wonderful surprise. Such powerful performances preceded his own in that role that no one was expecting a breakout-- and then it happened. Gotta love it.

The one and same. With all the young talent in the UK they went American on this role...

We saw the PBS showing of this concert version of Les Mis a couple weeks ago. TRULY amazing. Danny cried at the end as he always does. I had no idea one of THE Jonas brothers was in it until someone pointed it out.

Thanks for posting the clip, Evan. I'm so glad you enjoyed seeing this production, and I hope you do get to see it performed live.

I'll always have mixed feelings about this show, for personal reasons totally unrelated to the show. One year I splurged and got tickets to the Toronto production, with Michael Burgess as Valjean. Burgess and the production had gotten rave reviews, and I wanted to do something special for my partner at the time, who was a musician and had really enjoyed other musicals we'd been to.

He was quite dismissive of the show, and made me feel like I'd completely wasted the money and the effort to get the tickets and plan a special evening.

That was a turning point for me in our relationship, and I began to see the writing on the wall.

Maybe enough water has flowed beneath that bridge now, since I have a desire to get the DVD of the performance from which the clip is taken.

Oh, I know there are people who despise the show for many reasons. I am a big old boohoo baby though, so if I have to reach for kleenex then it is a fantastic one in my book...
