I'm a bit surprised they didn't make the wig a bit longer then.
Hrm, it's actually understandable about you feeling a bit weird about the upcoming season. We are putting it on a pedestal and if the second season isn't absolutely phenomenal, this could make fandom implode in the bad way.
Is it bad that part of me sort of hopes that happens? I don't know why, but I have fallen so far out of love with this fandom, I don't even know what to do about it.
I figured it to be pretty consistent over the first series, although I guess I'm mostly interested as to what dye he used to be able to strip it in and out so fast, considering he was like, back to ginger in his next you know, publicised appearance.
If you look at his hair in TGG it is blacker and more coiffed, and they filmed that first, SIP was filmed last and his hair is more naturally curled and more of a dark brown than black, but eh ...
He had to dye for Parade's End, as soon as Sherlock 2 filming was over, right now it looks really stripped, and more blond than ginger, poor lad, never gets to use his own hair.
(tangent) my daughter is now chuffed because we just dyed her hair today so she can be Sherlock for Halloween.

I'm assuming he's dying it then using bleach to get rid of it, probably by himself in the bathroom mirror, since he seems that sort of derp.
