More Americans say they have no religion

A wide-ranging study on American religious life found that the Roman Catholic population has been shifting out o of the Northeast to the Southwest, the percentage of Christians in the nation has declined and more people say they have no religion at all.

Interesting to say the least. Some will no doubt look to this as causation (forget correlation) for the United States' current crop of problems.

Regardless, I still find myself continuously surprised by how pervasive Christianity is in the American public sphere. It's something we're so used to, we simply screen it out of our awareness. But I often wonder the reaction of some if we were to see Muslim crescents hanging from rearview mirrors and on bumpers, Muslim dating sites advertised on buses, Muslim worship accoutrements sold in the ethnic aisles of grocery stores (I'm thinking of Catholic saints' candles here), and the like. Talk about a fear factor for some.

15% is still a heavy minority compared to the 76% who still call themselves Christian. I think your point in posting this is well taken, however. When it comes to faith, we're not Sweden just yet, but we may be leaning in that direction.

They may not overtly religious, but most of them are still mainline protestant christians anyway.
