I get where you're coming from. Gift giving is really stressful.

I'm completely broke, the kind where I pretty much always have only $1 and some change in my bank account because before my check is even deposited it's going toward bills or something Cracker needs or vet stuff.

All people are getting is a "Merry Christmas". I will feel so fucking guilty if I get presents from people but I can't reciprocate.

And like yours, it would most likely be given away to the salvation army which sort of makes me mad that I spent my money on something the hypothetical you doesn't care about but also makes me a bitch because I'm pissed that some unfortunate soul is getting something.

That whole "as long as it's from the heart" is bullshit.

THAT is the worst- when someone gets you something out of nowhere, and you just didn't buy them anything, or even get them a card, and you have that wave of panic like OH SHIT NOW WHAT DO I DO????

I always babble through it like OMG I GOT YOU NOTHING WHAT DO YOU WANT HOLY CRAP I'M A HORRIBLE PERSON YOU DON'T HAVE TO GIVE THIS TO ME!

Guilt forever and ever and ever.

I haven't been able to give gifts for a long time, so the fact that I finally have money to get my family presents this year is like OMG EXCITING. Hopefully they like what I get them, though...since I've been out of touch with buying stuff I have no idea whats good and whats not. Usually, in the past, I have given people stuff with my photos on it because I figure homemade is good. Their reactions weren't that great and it has made me sad so I know how you feel :(
Gift cards usually are good : )

I remember one year, I went through all of my baby pictures and split them up and made scrap books for Yodie and Carl C, based on who was in the picture with me.

Both of them were like "WTF" at the time. Yodie was pissed that I took apart the photo albums.

It took them a few years, but now they totally appreciate those scrap books.

I like homemade things, because my cats are more talented than I am at coming up with crafty things. I can draw and paint, but a lot of people don't like my style, so I don't bother. But if someone bangs me up a little cute something, I just squeee with joy. Last year, Donna made me a set of refrigerator magnets, and I just love them!

Aw, that was a really nice gift. I'm glad they at least appreciate it now.
Fridge magnets! What a super cute idea!

Screw them :) Don't get fancy gifts for them, get gift cards. Then head out to the saddlery and get Braggies something awesome :D I only give gifts to a very small number of people, the ones that really and truly matter to me (oh and work kris kringle coz otherwise I am a Scrooge LOL!). I know they'll appreciate whatever I get them, and I'll love whatever they get me because they got it while thinking about me :) And if they don't love it, they can go jump ;D

Gift cards have just become acceptable, and not a moment too soon.

I really get very, very few gifts. Bumpo, Mrs. McQueso, Yodie, Carl C, the boys, Julie, Superstar, and new this year, The Hamburglar. Everyone else gets a bottle of wine or dinner out, or we'll have a little party on my treat. No big, right? There's a reason for that!!!

Ugh, this is my gift-giving LIFE. And why I am so bad at giving gifts, thinking of gifts, and doing anything related to gifts. I feel like nothing I can come up with will adequately display how much the other person means to me, or translate to them with the same significance I would like.

This is actually the first year that I'm going to give my sister a gift, like a Real Gift rather than a gift certificate. I am nervous as hell. I am also trying to think of a gift for my significant other, my friends, my other family members...

Shit. I sympathize.
