Experimental dinner

Tonight was pan-fried lemon chicken nuggets (made with thigh meat), sticky rice, and fennel salad. Everybody liked it, and the kids actually did a pretty good job of eating the fennel. I wasn't sure how it would turn out - I'd never had fennel bulb before, and when I cut it it had a strong anise scent, so I figured I wouldn't like it (since I ( Read more... )

Neat! I shall have to try the fennel salad next week in one of my bentos. I made the orange carrots, but I really didn't like how they turned out. I might have just cooked them wrong, but I also think that I'm not fond of fat carrot pieces. The sesame-carrot salad is good though because it's made with shredded carrot and covered in lemon juice. Much easier for me to handle.

I made my first ever filled onigiri today too! I put salted salmon in mine. Turned out pretty good, but I think I need to add more salt to the outside next time. Let me know what you think of the tea egg! I had one of those today, myself.

The fennel salad was really easy. I pretty much made it exactly by the directions. I think I may have sliced a bit thinner than the picture, but that was the only change.

Links to the recipes are in the post. Really, this had to be one of least technically challenging real meals I've ever made.

The tea egg I had yesterday at lunch was a bit disappointing - there was a bit of marbling to the egg, but no real change in the flavor. I was glad I'd brought some salt. Maybe they'll be more interesting today, having had more time to steep.
