Fandom Netiquette for Newbies: a Navigational Guide

Jan 27, 2007 15:48

I've noticed that there are lots of newcomers participating in PotC fandom on LJ these days, which is wonderful. But I also know that LJ fandom can be daunting to a newbie. There are quite a few unwritten rules and conventions of courtesy that are taken for granted by those of us who have been around for awhile, and people sometimes react ( Read more... )

Many thanks for this very useful guide.
I have to admit I still don't understand 'hotlinking'. I've deliberately avoided putting in images unless they come from my Photobucket account, but I'd love to feel safe on this one. Is it a hotlink if you quote the URL where the material is located (and that URL is a live link - if you click on it you will reach the picture on another page), but the picture itself doesn't appear on your page?

Hotlinking is using the url of the picture to load an image file hosted on someone else's bandwidth onto your own page. Creating a direct link to the original page/site where the picture is listed is usually ok. So you're doing the right thing by posting images only from your Photobucket.

Here via metafandom!

Great post :D!

For Fandom on LJ though, don't forget we have a community for general information relating to fandom in newbieguide.

They are mostly specific fandom related posts but they do have a few general posts relating to fandom on LJ too :D

Having said that you have touched on a couple of subjects the posts over there seem to have overlooked. This is a very concise easy-to-understand guide so thank you :D.

Hi, I'm also here from metafandom. I love this guide, I really do. It's simple and straightforward, and I would have loved to have it when I started out.

One thing I suggest you add to the list is how to reply to a comment. Too often I see n00bs responding to comments left in their posts by making a separate comment thread. This is inconvenient, as the person who left the comment will not get notified when the n00b replies.
