I watched the Olympics Opening Ceremony last night. I didn't actually intend to, or at least not all of it. Because they wanted it to be dark to show off the lights better, it didn't start until 9pm here. It ended up finishing just before 1am. We ended up watching the Opening Ceremony twice. It was almost better-timed for us: started at breakfast, went until lunch. And so much of that very British culture is also Pakeha culture here - stuff we studied in History, music and movies we shared. The same will be true of other Commonwealth countries as well. In the beginning fly-over of the river, we recognised the South Bank Show theme, the East-Enders theme, the couple of bars of the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen". We loved the cheek. I suspect Americans found it a lot more culturally difficult.

I suspect you're right. One of the presenters doing the BBC commentary was the American former sprinter, Michael Johnson, and he said afterwards that he only recognised some things because of having spent so much time in the UK over the last few years.

I guess one thing the Brits did do because of the Empire was export stuff, whether that be music, sport or whatever. Of course with the sport, everyone else then went that's a good idea and went and did it better *lol*
