So, now and then, I read the posts at Stuff White People Like. It’s amusing, and clever, but I think the title is somewhat misguided.

My hometown, for example, is chock full of white people who would be mystified by this list.

It should be called “Stuff Educated Liberal Urban

My main issue with that site is that it seems to imply that ambition, creativity, and social consciousness are things to be made fun of. It's clever, but I get a bit uncomforatable with the notion that there should be anything "white" about any of those things.

To be fair, it's always seemed to me that they're not so much lampooning ambition, creativity, social consciousness, etc., as they're lampooning the certain type of person who uses these things as a tool or method of social superiority. People who are passionate about something not for its own sake but because it gives them a feeling of trendiness, mystique, moral-superiority, etc.

In other words, the people the site's really making fun of aren't any more creative or socially conscious (maybe ambitious) than anyone else; they just want to be seen to be so.

* Of course, this might just be my way of thinking "They aren't talking about me, uh, even though I like most of this stuff ..." * (Smiles)
