Well, I'm still trying to write my Aztec novel, The Teleportation of Gilbert Perez.  Even after my crisis of imagination the other day, even knowing that it will be very hard to understand the way the Aztecs saw the world well enough to write a story that doesn't simply steal their feathers.

Oh, yes, they loved poetry -- well, chant, song, etc. In fact, it was a mandatory part of universal education, and an important civic virtue. A city wasn't a real place until it had a drum platform. They loved it enough that many of their poems survived long enough to be written down centuries later. (The Aztecs wrote, but with pictograms; they couldn't write down poems word by word.)
