That's totally me right now. And I know, I know I rant repetitively about women's rights and all of that but I'm not going to shut up about it, because

Having read your post and having now picked up my jaw from where it has fallen on the floor, can I just say, I share your anger and utter disbelief. This is one reason that I keep saying that America, for all it's veneer of civilisation, is actually a primitive, backward place in so many ways. And I really truly don't understand it.

The UK isn't perfect, and we too have our share of mysogenists and homophobes, but I am fairly confident this could not happen here.

Yep, it's really frustrating. I love my country but we have history of being slow to accept social change, or change of any kind, for that matter.

What sucks is that on the federal level abortion has to be safe and legal, but the states can make loopholes in order to make getting that abortion absolutely hell. They can also do things like de-fund Planned Parenthood, even though Planned Parenthood is an over all health clinic, not just an abortion clinic.

Not all republicans are this extreme, a select few even believe in pro-choice, but an overwhelming amount of them constantly want to restrict women's rights (including birth control and equal pay) and they do everything in their power to make sure homosexuals get repressed too.

You are right, of course, that this primitive attitude is directly linked to religion, which as we all know, has spent many centuries suppressing and subjugating women and sexuality.
