Car trouble:

Recently Dave & I have noticed that the Escape has problems sounding enthused about starting in the morning. It'll turn, but very reluctantly. It doesn't do this later in the day so I'm thinking it just doesn't like the cooler temps.

Would this point to an alternator issue do you think?

Battery, most likely.

Jim beat me too it. Most likely battery. Batteries Plus will test it for free if you have one around you someplace.

Yep, battery. I'll assume that you don't have a carburetor so it's most likely the battery. Just make sure you get one with enough CCA ( cold cranking amps ) to start an Escape.
