As most of you are probably aware, the California Supreme Court recently issued a ruling that legalizes same-sex marriage in California. As a result, various conservative groups launched a ballot initiative (Proposition 8) to amend the state constitution to overturn this ruling, and the initiative will be on the ballot in the November election ( Read more... )

I think that once this is all over, people like you will deserve credit for helping the church through a rough patch.

I see reports in the media now about how plenty of Mormons are rejecting the leadership's call on this issue, and I think that those doing the rejecting are actually helping protect the image of the church, which is really taking a beating because of all this.

Anyway, mostly just wanted to say I enjoyed and appreciated your thoughts.

Yes, I am aware that the Church sent aid to victims of Hurricane Gustav, but that wasn't really my point. My point was that the Church is asking its members to spend their time and money fighting gay marriage, and I was wondering why that time and money couldn't be spent helping the sick and afflicted (or any number of other things ( ... )

Why Prop 8 was such an important priority to the LDS church:

Sometimes the Lord has no other purpose than to separate the sheep from the goats. It seemed to work.

So God would ruin the lives of homosexuals throughout the country just to test people? That sounds somewhat problematic to me. (Especially given that at least one member of the Seventy said that Church members are free to disagree with the Church's position on Prop 8. If followed the party line on this one was essential to our salvation, I have trouble believing a general authority would say that.)
