Time Spent with Beckett Comes in Handy

“What’s the worst that could happen?” Ianto inquired, trying to cover himself with his trousers without zipping them up.

“It could still rupture, you could need surgery, there's infertility, impotence…” Martha answered, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Oh,” he commented, getting her point. He’d work something out.

“Also, tell me if there’s blood…,” she spoke and her gaze went to his crotch.

“When I pee,” he finished and she shook her head, “ah…”

“On the other hand, Jack was right,” Martha informed him, “he said you were a big boy indeed.”

Ianto looked away as he knew he was blushing and placed his hands over his groin.

“Jack, can you bring an ice pack from the kitchen?” he heard her ask so she must have been using her comlink, “He’ll be fine…he just needs to take it easy the next couple of days.”

He wasn’t allowed up until Jack came so he had time to think. Possible impotence or infertility over a stupid football game? Truthfully, he wasn’t sure which scared him more. He knew that not being able to perform should have been worse, but he wanted the idea of being able to have a kid if he really wanted to even though Jack didn’t think he was able to get pregnant anymore. He still wanted the possibility.

“Ianto, how are you?” Jack questioned, walking in with a large ice pack.

“Fine,” he spoke, taking the pack from him and placing it down his trousers, “I enjoy when my genitals are used as a target.”

Jack just frowned at the attempt at a joke as Ianto zipped his trousers and fastened the belt at its fattest hole.

“Where’s Cady?” he asked, holding out an arm so the older man would take it.

Well…” the other started, supporting him as he stood up, “when I carried you down here, she went after James, kicked him in the shin so that he fell down. He didn’t want to fight back, of course, but she went after his area so he had to roll over onto his stomach as Gwen picked her up…Did you know that Cady’s a biter? Didn’t look too bad though so Gwen still has her in a bear hug as we speak.”

“Does Torchwood have a wheelchair?” Martha inquired in a way that was anything but casual.

No…” Jack answered, then paused for a moment and repeated, “No.”

Ianto’s thoughts were growing foggier so he couldn’t recall but he was glad they didn’t.
“We’ll get you to the couch and you can sit there,” Jack spoke and they tottered up the stairs.

“Yanno! Yanno!” Cady screamed, struggling against Gwen who didn’t let her go until he was settled on the couch. She ran until he positioned himself wrong and grimaced.

“Yanno?” she asked in a sad voice, “You hurt?”

He nodded and she looked at Jack, clarifying “he has a booboo?”

“Yes, he does,” he replied and it was clear he was trying not to laugh.

“When I had a booboo on my finger, mummy kissed it and made it all better,” she said, slightly bouncing on her heels, “but your mummy’s not here.”

“No, she’s not,” Ianto agreed; she was in Newport but he couldn’t remember if she had ever done that when he was little or not. He hoped that was just because of the drugs. Then, a strong hand rested on his good shoulder.

“Cady, I promise to kiss his booboo later, does that make you feel better?” asked Jack, sitting down on the couch as well and the Welshman glared at him.

“Yes!” exclaimed the little girl, not knowing what that really meant.

“Ianto, I’m sorry…” started James, stepping closer, “It just became out of hand.”
Cady made a move, but Jack grabbed her before anything could occur.

“That’s not nice, he apologized. Now, you have to do the right thing and let it go,” the older man spoke and she pouted.

“I accept your apology, James,” Ianto spoke, wanting to be left alone at the moment.

“If there’s anything I can do…”

“We’ll tell you,” Jack interrupted and the younger man saw that the girl was still eyeing James with loathing. He backed away and after going into one of the hallways, she turned back to them. Then, Cady crawled into Jack’s lap. Her little fingers played with the buttons on his vest and he gave Ianto a look.

“Little young for that, aren’t you?” Jack questioned and Ianto shut his eyes, saying, “She’s just curious, Jack.”

“What this? A clock?” asked the high pitched voice and he opened his blue eyes again to see her dangling Jack’s pocket watch. It was open so she must have found the clasp.

“It is a watch. It was a present from a very long time ago…”

“From Estelle,” the other man added without thinking…stupid drugs.

“Yes, Estelle,” his boss confirmed in a very terse manner.

“Who’s Estelle?” Cady inquired, not letting go of the watch.

“Estelle…Estelle was someone I loved,” Jack answered, “before I met Ianto.”

“Before I was even born,” the Welshman blurted and wondered if he should just sleep before he said anything else. The little girl had an odd expression for a second before she continued looking at the watch.

“Mummy and daddy say I can have tea parties when the big hand is there and the little hand is there,” she said, pointing at 4 o’clock which was in about 16 minutes. Oh no, surely not but James wasn’t around to ask otherwise.

“We’re more coffee people, not tea,” Ianto explained and she shook her head.

“But I WANT a tea party!” she exclaimed, shaking her head and he realized something. She was tired. They just needed to stall her so he could have some rest.

‘Then, Jack will have to make it…”

“What? I’m not making tea,” he refused and the girl hit him in the chest, yelling, “I WANT A TEA PARTY!”

The other man laid a hand on shoulder so his thumb touched his cheek.

“Just humor her, Jack,” Ianto told him in a soft voice, “for me.”

A grimace crossed his face and he knew the other wanted to refuse but wouldn’t.

“James, make us some tea from the kitchen…I think we have some…” Jack said into the comlink, not sure sounding. They hadn’t had any tea for awhile…not since everything had changed so much. He stood up and placed Cady onto the couch beside Ianto. There was a horrible screeching sound as he pulled the low table closer and knocked all the odds and ends onto the floor.

“Have to do without a cloth, I suppose,” he whispered so only Ianto could hear. Hopefully, it wouldn’t take long.

“Where is it?” she asked, kicking her feet.

“It’s coming…” Jack told her, “James is fixing it.”

She made a face at that and Ianto closed his eyes again, leaning back against the headrest. He must have dozed off because the next thing he knew, he was being woken up by a high pitched voice, screaming, “Tea!!!”

James was carrying four tea cups, followed by Gwen carrying another tea cup and a tray with sugar and milk. The first cup was given to Jack who took a sip of straight tea before declaring, “That’s not too bad really.”

A small smile crossed the tallest man’s lips for a moment before disappearing and he explained, “I learned from an expert.”

“TEA!!!” Cady demanded and James held one out to her, pausing before letting her have it.

“What was that?” Gwen asked, setting the tray down on the table.

“I was checking that her eyes were still brown,” he exclaimed with a bit of embarrassment, “She reminded me of someone then who I knew, but he had grey eyes.”

“He sounds pleasant,” Jack stated, voice dripping with sarcasm. Ianto took his own, adding milk to it. After a short while, he fell asleep again.

Jack saw Ianto’s eyes close again and took the cup before his unconscious hands dropped it.

“I’m not sleepy,” Cady maintained before she yawned. There had been several yawns and he just smiled at her stubbornness. They should have had biscuits, but maybe there hadn’t been any in the cupboard. Torchwood wasn’t known for its supply of sweets on hand. They usually bought pastries outside.

“Tastes different without it being in cubes,” James commented, setting his cup back on the tray.

“Best tea I ever tasted was on Arcadia,” Jack spoke, but then a thought struck him that he wasn’t even sure if Arcadia existed at the moment.
