Every inch of his body felt like it had been pulled apart and then slapped back together. It was almost as bad as dying…almost. In a flash of light, James Norrington arrived on the arm of Jack Harkness. He’d forgotten the attachment until the man gently removed the arm from around his. Then, he stumbled and mumbled something about, “Nothing compares to a TARDIS.”
James had no idea what a TARDIS was, but if this was 2008, then there would be a lot of things he wouldn’t understand and he didn’t want to start now. Instead, he looked at his new surroundings. It was dark and metallic and the ceiling seemed to stretch forever where…there was a creature flying.
“Is that a dragon?” he asked, peering up.
“Oh, Myfanwy,” the other said with a grin, “She’s a Pterodactyl…dinosaur.”
“Monstrous lizard,” James repeated and Jack just shook his head, “Just remember her as Myfanwy and that she came from the rift so there aren’t any others…that we know of.” His gaze turned to everything else, but there was too much to see. Something caused the light to reflect and he saw water in the floor.
“If this is a ship, it appears to be leaking,” the taller man spoke and the captain found that funny as well.
“We call it ‘The Hub’, it is a building but,” he started, walking over to point at a wall, “behind that concrete wall is Cardiff bay so depending on the tides, we have excess sea water in those holding areas. Myfanwy uses it like a birdbath.”
It was hard to picture the…Myfanwy bathing in it. However, he accepted this and continued looking.
“I have to talk to Ianto. Just stay on this floor, okay?” Jack asked, gesticulating with his hands. He used “okay” like Sparrow would say “savvy” so James nodded and parroted, “okay.” The other man walked up some stairs so he couldn’t see him anymore and he began exploring. There were desks, smaller than what he was used to, with objects that were both strange and familiar.
“They still use paper,” he said to himself, picking one off a desk, “Rift activity report.” There were times and terms like “high”, “normal” and “low.” The Rift would be something else he’d have to ask about. There were also a lot of odd boxes that blinked and…had pictures? The box had a sort of map on it that labeled itself as Cardiff. On a chair, he noticed a stuffed, cloth rat like a children’s toy. What sort of place was this? And who was “Ianto”?

Jack pulled up the hatch and climbed into his room. He’d hoped to find Ianto still asleep in bed, but he was sitting up in his pensive position. His lover had opened his mouth to speak yet closed it on seeing him. After a few more seconds, he’d found it, “You’ve been away again.”
The leader of Torchwood happened to touch his face and realized it wasn’t as smooth as modern razors would make it.
“How long this time?” Ianto asked in a tone that Jack hated. He sat on the bed about a foot away from him.
“About six months.”
“And you were with the Doctor?” his lover questioned and the unsaid jealousy was heard in it.
“No,” Jack replied and tried to brace himself for what would come next as he uttered, “My daughter.”
“Your daughter?! Ianto exclaimed, finally turning to face him, “You never mentioned her before…ever.”
“I know, but…”
“It never came up,” he finished for him, “because these things just never come up, if you would just tell me these things, the things that are important to you, even if it’s a completely different topic.”
He stood up, continuing, “If I hadn’t asked about the picture I found, you never would have even told me you were married…”
His hand was on one rung of the ladder with a foot on another as he spoke, “and you can’t say there weren’t opportunities, I told you about the scare with Lisa…and that was just her being late.”
The young Welshman was halfway up as he added, “There were rumors. We all heard things…that Captain Jack Harkness; he has children that look as old as him or older…but I thought if there was any truth to those, you’d tell me yourself.”
None of the words seemed liked the right ones to say although he should warn him: Ianto was only wearing trousers.
“You don’t want to be going up there just now.”
“And why’s that?” the other questioned; his hair still stuck up from sleeping.
“Because I didn’t come back alone,” Jack explained, standing up. His lover put both feet back on the floor and inquired, “Is she here?”
“No, it’s actually a Navy Admiral from 1724 or so,” he replied and Ianto appeared to be waiting for the punch line that never came. He moved closer, adding, “Trea told him that I’d take care of him.”
With a nod, he saw Ianto go back into business mode, stating, “Then, he’ll need clothes, a job, a flat, new identity…”
He began dressing and Jack waited for him to continue from before, but it wouldn’t come.
“Do you remember when I told you that the Time Agency took away two years of my life so I couldn’t remember them?” he asked as Ianto carefully tucked the shirt tails into his trousers, “And that’s why I quit them?”
There was a brief nod.
“They kidnapped Trea and then they tried to make sure that I would have no memory of her,” Jack said, “I thought I’d lost her forever.”
The other man stopped in his actions and looked at him, “I’m sorry, Jack.” Their blue eyes met and they hugged. Jack breathed in his scent and held him close, touching his hair and ass.
“I missed you so much,” he admitted and Ianto smiled.

Ianto adjusted himself in Jack’s office as his lover climbed out of the hatch. He had panicked a little bit when he’d woken up alone on the mattress and then, it had gotten worse when Jack had revealed having a daughter, but his lover did seem to be making an effort and the shagging had been fantastic although more tender than they had ever done it before. Then, a nagging thought occurred to him.
“Jack, did you leave him in the Hub?”
“Of course, don’t want him to get lost in Cardiff,” the older man explained and he started running for the main floor.
“Ianto!’ Jack yelled after him and the Welshman sighed in relief. The strange man was thumbing through the dusty reference books.
“Doesn’t appear that I missed much except some wars and apparently the colonies are all their own countries now,” said the man, looking up with jade green eyes.
"There's always something," Ianto replied without thinking.
“Ianto Jones, meet Admiral James Norrington.”
He held out a hand, but the other didn’t reach for it until he corrected, “You can call me James.”
“Welcome to Cardiff,” he stated, not quite sure where to begin even though they’d done this sort of thing before. How confused must he be right now?
“I suppose a reinstatement with the Royal Navy is out of the question?” James questioned, standing up. The youngest of the three merely nodded in a sad way. It was bad enough when the three from plane had accidentally landed in modern Cardiff, but why had Jack’s daughter displaced this man on purpose?
“I have an idea,” Jack spoke in that way of his that was like a three year old getting into mischief, uh oh, “I’d like you to meet Janet.”
No, not Janet, was he crazy?
“Sir, I don’t think now would be the best time to meet Janet,” he argued, “Maybe at a later date, like when the Queen swims the Channel naked.”
“No, I think they should meet now,” his boss said with a grin and began leading the way. James and Ianto followed with the latter trying to remember how much RetCon they had on hand and how much would be enough to make him forget five minutes if this went as badly as he assumed it would. Janet was in the far corner of her cell in the shadows, but even an idiot could see she wasn’t human.
“Is she a fish person or the victim of a curse?” James asked in a calm manner and Ianto was in stunned silence.
“Janet is a Weevil, that’s a type of alien…from another planet,” Jack explained and the tallest of the three nodded as though that made sense. This wasn’t normal.
How do you live?
