I have some stuff on a couple of flash drives, and some older Microsoft software (which is what I was using) on an older laptop (which I can't use to connect to the Internet as we don't have a phone connection).
Maybe the repairman and I can figure something out from all of that?
It may be possible to transfer the files to another hard drive directly. Without knowing whats actually wrong with your system, I cannot be more specific- but I have been able to recover the files off of two drives so far after catastrophic failures.
"Software" is a very nebulous term, though. If it's just the operating system or your applications that got fried, that does not automatically mean that all of the other data you have on the drive is unrecoverable.
What I would do is hoof it down to your nearest computer shop (a real one, not Best Buy) and pick up an empty USB external hard-drive enclosure or docking station. Put the "glitched" hard drive into it, then connect this to another PC and see if your data is still readable. If it is, then put a fresh hard drive into the computer, reinstall your OS and applications, then copy the files you want to save.
If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, and you don't have a tech-savvy friend nearby, message me privately and I'll give you my mailing address and instructions on how to very securely pack the drive for shipment, and I'll see what I can do with it.
Yes, but the files on the hard drive can be accessed and transferred to another computer.
I've dealt with two dead drives, so one thats not dead- just with a messed up OS can be salvaged fairly easily.
The files are not dependent on the OS- they sit there on the drive simply as files.
Hook the drive to a working comp, and the drive can be accessed as an extra drive..And the files transferred to the new comp.
I can't do it from all the way across the continent, but whatever you do, do NOT wipe and reinstall the OS while the existing drive is in it, or you'll lose those files.

And no backups of any kind? D:
Like the above commenter said, how about data recovery? Maybe the stuff on the hard drive is ok, and just needs a pro to recover it.
Good luck.

Though I was told that the hardware was completely fine, it was (I assume) the software that glitched.
