If you have a DeviantArt account...

Is it just me, or has it become an insanely virused-up site of late?

I just watched DA viruses nail a public library computer, and the staff did nothing but stare. I mean literally nothing, not even an emergency shut-down. After I warned them about the virus while they were watching.

*shakes head*

internet, internet stupidity, public libraries, computer trouble

People over in FA were complaining about DA viruses too. Sidian got hit hard with one over in DA.

Folks suggested using Firefox with Ad Block plus, since most of the viruses seem to be in those ads on DA.

Makes me not want to go to DA. Ugh.

I have to check out my anti-virus and see if it has an adblocker. This has gotten beyond ridiculous. Granted, DA is free, but you think they'd try to be careful about things like this.

You're right, I'm running Firefox with Ad Block Plus and have never had a problem with DA.

It still seems like a foolish move on the part of DA's admin to let the site get as nastily virused up as it has. Or are they trying to chase people away?

My eldest is running a virus scan right now due to dA weirdnesses ... thanks for the heads up.

Do you know of any good independent ad block programs?

And good luck to the eldest on DA.

They might have been under orders not to shut down the computers except after closing. Or just weren't computer literate.

I don't go to DA even for links because it usually wants me to sign up. I've got enough sites to remember passwords for to add any I won't visit often.

From what I know and have seen of them, "not computer literate" is the most likely answer.

For sites like that, I have one password I use, and I let Firefox remember it for me. They never have any critical information anyway.

I'm not worried about my info being stolen, more about the fact that I'll go there once or twice a year and will have a hard time remembering my id if it isn't my email address. I have two passwords I use for sites like that, one I started with years ago and one I changed to about 5 years ago.

Yeah, it's been pretty common knowledge that dA's ads are riddled with viruses for a while. Their admins don't seem to care either.

My understanding is that their usual response to criticisms of any sort, regardless of how justified they are, is to invite the complainer to go and take a flying leap.

Conveniently, virtually all of DA's ads are hosted on ads.deviantart.com, which is in my hosts file mapped to localhost.
