That maybe just your B&N. I've gone to both Borders and B&N over the years since I've lived here. 1 B&N has closed down, and another open up. As time as gone by, Borders has had their large selection slowly diminished, while B&N has gotten stronger.
All in all, it was Border's member program that drove them under.
Part of it was that they didn't charge anything for it. Wouldn't have been a problem, except what they offered through it. Long and short of it is, that the deals they offered with their membership allowed members to rip them off somewhat. It was a major source of cash hemorrhage, and they couldn't stop it because it would have been worse (not to mention a legal nightmare) to suddenly change what the membership did. It just kind of snowballed from there.
Don't look for B&N to stop charging for theirs anytime soon, as Borders was a good example to be careful how you set up your membership program.
That's too bad. There's a Borders not too far from my place that I usually go to although the B&N across town actually has a larger selection. I hope the Borders here doesn't close.
The cubs greeted the news of Borders' bankruptcy with wailing ... until they learned that they aren't closing their mall stores ... for now. That and Family Christian are the two closest bookstores to our house, and they're sort of a pain to get to, and their selections are spotty.
I hope your local B&N management steps up their game now that they're the only show in town.
I doubt B&N will change much. Hey, they won, why bother changing anything?
Though if they did, I could do with a smaller selection if the staff stopped treating everyone who didn't dress "yuppie" like a bad odor when we come in to look at the books.
Borders was actually forced out of one local mall contractually when B&N opened a monster store. But then, that Borders took over the space that USED to be B. Dalton.
The same thing happened here, though the Borders store replaced a Waldenbooks, and they're both owned by the same company (or at least, the Waldenbooks employees ended up working for the Borders store).
The Borders I used to go in all the time in downtown Seattle is closing, too. I can't afford even the sales, but I at least should go in and say goodbye -- they have given me so much pleasure over the years! Thank you for reminding me, Erik.
I'm taking this opportunity to grab a lot of the B&W Savage Sword of Conan omnibuses, along with Solomon Kane and King Kull. As I explained it, they're sleazy trash, but they're entertaining sleazy trash!
That and some other books, like Exeter House local ghost story/general weirdness collections, a few history books, and what not. I can't truly afford it all (what else is new?) but after all they gave me I owe them something.

Though I have gotten some nice things from the new Rewards Special program, which you do have to pay for.
