Now I've seen it all

There are groups of people who wish to make the United States (and other nations) into a monarchy. You know, reigning king and all that.

I am not kiddingY'know, democracy does have its flaws, but this seems like a somewhat extreme response. But that said, if I ever become King Eric the I, rest assured that I'll have governemnt jobs for all my ( Read more... )

Yeah, but he's dead and that kinda puts him out of the running. But thanks for reminding me of the one and only Emperor Norton.

Well, apparently he has an empress still living, José Sarria "The Widow Norton", who passed his title down to Empress Nicole the Great.

If I put this kind of stuff into a novel, I would be accused of making it up, I'm sure.

You know... there are plenty of people who want a king... but very few people who want to be a peon under a king...

Well, how many people want to be a peon in a democracy?

But seriously though, there's a lot of things I don't like about this country but I'm not trading this system for a Monarchy.

At least unde rthe current system if you don't like whoever is reigning, you only have to wait 4-8 years and they're gone.

The advantage of a monarchy is that the government is not changing every 4 years or so.

The disadvantage of a monarchy is that sometimes idiots inherit the throne.

The advantage of a democracy is that voters elect the government in power.

The disadvantage of a democracy is that not every voter is well-educated on the issues.

All systems have flaws.

Carvis and I discussed governments and he came up with a system that is a democratic, oligarchical, elected-for-life monarchy (well emperor rather than monarch but same idea). Sounds strange but it's a concept that might actually work. Since we'll never be able to get it into operation though, guess it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't mind a monarchy that had a certain specific vixen for queen. ;)

Kind of smacks of replacing a car with a horse-and-buggy doesn't it?

That having been said, I nominate myself for Dark Lord.

That's an ominous statement given that you're using a picture of Vlad Tepes. Even if (his insane brutality aside) he was rather an effective monarch for his place and time.
