Movie Review: The Secret of Kells

Jan 29, 2011 11:27

That bit of animation is from one of the best and most unique animated films I've seen in recent years, The Secret of Kells. It was made in Ireland and it is basically a retelling of the creation of the Book of Kells in Dark Ages Ireland, and it has some of the most gorgeous animation I've ever seen.

Long story short (warning, spoilers ahoy!):( Read more... )

art, history, animation, faerie, good movies, christianity, wolves

The animation is indeed gorgeous. This really is a great example of something being done "for the art".

The style is certainly very different from American animated films, isn't it?

And I would like to know, how did you like the movie's story?

Lastly, glad to know you're back in your own home & I hope things settle down for you for a while!

Loved this part. But, it does remind me of Watership Down.

Loved which part? And I can't really say it reminded me of Watership Down at all, beyond both films being very well done and rather different from the usual American animation.

My church has "family movie nights" every month, and this one needs to be shown. It's wonderful.

I agree. I think you already saw it yourself, right? What did you think of how they handled the tragic elements?

I think it was done well, and as far as being too scary for the littlies, it didn't seem any worse than that one scene in "Finding Nemo" (the one with the barracuda ... there were some other scary scenes too).

Tangentially, here's a short on YouTube from someone who worked on Kells, with help from the same studio.

I'll look at that link later.

And thanks for your comments on the movie itself.

It's beautiful! I'll go check and see if the library has it. Thank you. :-D

I was surprised my public library owned a copy! They usually only get popular films and/or the really cheap stuff. This was a pleasant exception.

And good luck finding a copy.

Forgot to get back to you. The Seattle Public Library does have copies of it, and I just put it on hold. :-D
