The military got intrigued by the powerloader in the movie "Aliens" in the 80s, and sent observers to look the design over during filming. The idea is perfect for many applications, with combat versions being a desirable extra if it can be made practical.
Of course theres also the Pitman project experiments in the Vietnam era, but those went nowhere due to power and control issues that could not be resolved.
