Mother faces a Facebook nightmare

Namely, a stalker is after her kids, and Facebook refuses to either shut her account down or give the cops any helpFacebook, what the heck is wrong with you? Granted that I doubt the 'stalker' is anything more than some net troll cackling over how terrified the poor woman and her daughters are, but he might be something worse. And even if not, why ( Read more... )

I'd want more information before I decide facebook is horribly in the wrong-- there's not a lot of information there. So far as I can tell, their only evidence is horrible things posted on the mom's facebook page, and second-hand reports from 12 year old girls.

As best I can tell, the mother found out about the hacked account, tried to deactivate it (two-week cool down), called the cops, cops called Facebook, Facebook did not shut down the account (was there an identity verification thing? Were they not able to, since it was in a two-week being deactivated phase?) and the cops are looking into the matter.

Conjecture: did they not have any unusual IP addresses accessing the girl's account?

The way I've been hearing it is that FB simply and plainly refuses to cooperate with anyone over this. Combined with some of the things I've heard and seen and learned about them, they almost seem to live for a chance to be obnoxious to their customers.

I don't know the full story, but I would recommend the woman get a very good lawyer and see what legal avenues are open to her.

Any faceless organization will suddenly behave when the pocketbook is threatened.

Facebook holds on to your data with an iron grip. I've read that it is damn near impossible to get them to ACTUALLY delete your info.

(DA is similarly bad about deleting the art from Banned accounts. You can't access it from normal routes, but if you've faved something, it's still there, and the direct links all work too.)
