Well, this contest makes slightly more sense than the previous ones. And thus far they've shown some scary work with a katar (punch dagger/short sword) that went right through Roman-style chain and the pig carcass they had it on. You should've seen the blood! The Romans were never much for archery themselves. They typically used auxiliaries for that from the rest of the Empire. And yes, melee combat was more their forte than archery.

The oldest mode of Roman combat was something rather like the phalanx, AFAIK, but they eventually "loosened it up" into the classic legion formation.
