Even the Mayans are getting sick of this 2012 nonsense

Right from MSNBC -- even the Mayans are sick and tired of the whole uproar over 2012. Nor can I blame them, considering the history New Agers and similar sorts have of ripping off (typically badly distorted) ideas about Native American religions and presenting them as the latest spiritual fix a newfound "truth ( Read more... )

The thing I hate about the Mayan Calendar is the total lack of pin-ups.

I've seen examples of Mayan art. Be glad; Mayan pin-ups would be less Dorado's Chel and more 'Shub-Niggurath meets Guro'.

This.

"Bernal suggests that apocalypse is "a very Western, Christian" concept projected onto the Maya, perhaps because Western myths are "exhausted.""

I would tend to concur: 2012 seems to be the last gasp of the apocalyptic hype that seemed to undercut segments of both Christian and New Age thought in our zeitgeist, mainly around Y2K. The Mayan theme tends to focus the attention of the New Agers alone, however.

The Mayans did great astronomy, and they would have greeted this coming date as a big celebration. I intend to do that myself, and celebrate yet another debunking of the culture of fear.

But then knowing New Agers, they will insist that something happened 'astrally' - hey it worked for Cayce's followers when his prophecies failed ;)

I wouldn't say that Western myths ae "exhausted" (save in the minds of those Westerners who know nothing about their culture), but many of them have gotten so deformed over the years the original meaning and intent is all but forgotten.

The Christian idea of the Apocalypse was originally seen as more of a renewal of the world as compared to its destruction. Nor were we Christians supposed to spend all our time trying to figure out when it was coming so we could suddenly straighten out our act and "look busy!"

Like with the Harmonic Convergence?

Or the Millerites of 1844 (later called the Seventh-Day Adventists).

The Christian idea of the Apocalypse was originally seen as more of a renewal of the world as compared to its destruction. Nor were we Christians supposed to spend all our time trying to figure out when it was coming so we could suddenly straighten out our act and "look busy!"

Nor were we supposed to gloat over it with smacking lips and "SEE? SEE? I WAS RIGHT! SEE? SEE? YOU'RE WRONG! HAVE FUN IN HELL! HAW! HAW! HAW!"

Or make it the entire Gospel.
