As in, they have such a pathetic budget, they can't afford to stick a few feathery wings on the backs of their hawkmen and ... hey, didn't they make some of those for the Flash Gordon movie circa 1980? Too bad they couldn't recycle some props from the old movie. (Maybe it all got destroyed years ago, or sold off on eBay.)
Why? Because that's "realistic". *gag*

There is a sub-genre called "Naturalistic Science Fiction"; Joss Whedon's Firefly is the best-known current example.
Flash Gordon -- and anything else originating in over-the-top Thirties Pulp SF --is definitely NOT naturalistic.
Trying to make Flash ("AAAAAA-AAAAAAAH!" -- Queen) naturalistic is like trying to write Deep Literary Character Studies and Deep Literary Character Interaction in furry space opera. The two just do NOT go together.
