He covers most of the media-inspired terror-campaigns I remember from my own youth. Remember when the Population Bomb was going to blow us all sky-high, when the Russkies were going to nuke us, when we feared not global warming but a new ice age, and all the other enviromentalist lies we were force-fed as kids? "Culture of Fear" is also a good "don't panic" book; I've waffled on global warming but frankly I feel that recycling, energy and resource efficiency are all good things anyway on both financial and environmental grounds regardless.

I agree on the whole 'taking care of nature' idea; it's just that I feel that modern environmentalism (like many other movements in society) made a BIG mistake hitching their wagon so closely to one political party. All too often the real environmental interests get sacrificed for political ones*. And phony ideas of "well, he belongs to the enmy, so we can't trust anything he says!" replace any kind of give and take.

I mean, who even remembers that Republican Teddy Roosevelt was a tremendous conversationist (as well as a political reformer), and that he started the National Park system?

* -- Note that I can't offer any specific examples of that myself, but I've heard it from a few environmental engineers I know of elsewhere.
