Rating: PG-13

Archival: My site, CD, Lean Into Me. All others ask.

Disclaimer: SUE ME NOT. ME IN COLLEGE. HAVE NO MONEY.

Summary: This is the discussion btwn Vaughn and Weiss I want to think took place . . . *g* Right before Vaughn went to the train station to see Sydney. At the train station, when Vaughn spoke about his father, to me it seemed he was justifying what Weiss apparently told Haladki or Devlin. (Or at least THEY SAY he told them . . . *g*).

Weiss' Office

"I'm sorry Vaughn . . ."

"Sorry?!" Vaughn asked incredulously. "You betray my trust and you're sorry???"

"I didn't . . ."

"You put Sydney in jeopardy!"

"And I was doing my job. You weren't. I never meant to . . ."

"I thought we were friends." Vaughn interrupted again.

"We are. But I'm not going to risk my neck and possibly the safety of an operation because you have a crush . . ."

"Stop it! Stop it right now!" Vaughn yelled.

"My job is to protect this country . . . not your feelings. You're out of line. You're too emotionally involved. Protocol . . ."

"To hell with protocol!" Vaughn paused, "You know what? I understand . . . I understand what you did. I know what you're saying. But how am I supposed to trust you now?"

Weiss glanced at the floor, "Mike, I'm sorry . . . But like I said, trust is a tricky thing . . . In this world . . the world we work in . . . we have to follow protocol. We can't let friendship and personal considerations take priority. We can't let trust get in the way of that."

"If you expect me to forgive you, I already have. If you expect me to say I understand, I do. But if you expect me to say that I agree with you . . . to blindly follow orders . . . I don't. That's what my dad did . . . He was a good man and I'm proud of him, but he was a company man. He never questioned a thing and it got him killed. I understand why you did what you did, but I think you need to take a look around, Eric. Start thinking for yourself." Vaughn paused, then continued, "You're still my friend . . . and I don't want you to get yourself killed . . . or even get me killed because you can't accept that every situation is unique. Protocol can't apply to them all." With that, Vaughn turned and left, leaving Weiss staring at his desk.
