Summary:
Eric was glad that they had finally been able to actually go on a first date. The last months had carried so much stress and hassle that neither of them had been able to contemplate such a thing. And they’d spent plenty of time together but had not yet had an actual formal date. Besides, the ring was burning a hole in his pocket. He’d already tried to propose once and they’d both ended up kidnapped and tortured. That had only added the pressure to tonight. And was it too soon? Arica had been brutally assaulted and you didn’t simply get over it. You didn’t simply anything anymore.
Absently he pulled the ring box out of his pocket and opened it, as if checking to see if the ring really would be good enough for her. Was he doing the right thing? Slipping it back into his pocket, he resolved to take the night as it came - one thing at a time. That’s what the therapist had recommended. And now, the important thing was to go pick her up. He’d taken great care to plan the evening - a cute play at one of the local theatres, dinner at a romantic Italian restaurant that came highly recommended from friends… And he’d decided to end the night with a walk along a (well-lit and safe) beach, where they could do the very cliché couple things - walking in the surf, holding hands, and gazing at the stars. The night would be perfect - it had to be.
And if it was, he’d propose.
And if she said yes, he’d give her a careful hug and tell her how much he loved her and that nothing else mattered.
