A start to who knows what, a finish to who knows where.

Jol always negotiated his path about twelve inches from the sidewalk curb, no further. People are more likely to notice. With this particular game, at this particular hour, getting noticed was the first step to a successful cruise. And the superficial attention was the part Jol enjoyed most. It didn't matter if it was a male or female taking notice ( Read more... )

very intriguing, is this the first part of a new work? It certainly makes me want to read on.

Heh, I suppose it could be called that.

Honestly, it is an idea I've been hatching, with no clue of the direction its headed. It develops slowly, and I've kept my eyes open for a plot....which is proving most difficult (this is my first stab ever at writing something long and involved, I've got NO IDEA what the hell I am doing....). Here are links to a few more paragraphs I wrote over the last month or two. Any advice on putting a story together would be FABULOUS.

Ha ha - you are asking me? That's sort of exactly how I write, just making it all up as I go along.

well, ok, that's not strictly true - I usually know how a book is going to end, and up to now I always write the ending either first, or pretty much fairly early on, then i just ramble and let the characters get their on their own steam.

mroctober said yesterday that he didn't believe in the myth that characters just took over and I feel sorry for him, as it's happened to me many times, and often the characters simply refuse to do what they are told.

But for short stories I do tend to have some concrete idea of the structure. I suggest using some story prompts, there's a huge list here

but you get a ton of them if you type plot generator into Google.

Good luck!

Don't care where it lands.... Really?' anonymous December 11 2010, 15:07:21 UTC
As one reads the words, its hard not to feel a sense of ones own struggles and fears as being able to identify and recall how difficult it was to step onto the field in which to start playing the game that even now after so many years the fear of failures and fumbles cause one to recoil. To acknowledge Jol is to acknowledge one that resides in all of us, but to the degree of acknowledged existence and understanding is where for most the challenge lies. Jol is one to beware of as his shadowy existence will only grow darker and colder as time moves on, feeding upon notions of loss and failure that become self perpetuating as he causes one to lose focus and appreciation of and value of that in which has been achieved, contributing to ones greater self worth and true gradual independence. Read what one writes themselves and head the message yourself that you are bestowing upon others.
