The adult seal isn't ugly at all! Look, it's smiling at you! Or... squinting. I dunno. But eeeeeee whiskers and fuzzy and rolypoly!
That baby seal just makes me really, really want to club it. Stop looking at me like that! (Er, I'm saying that to the seal, not to the rest of you. I'm used to humans' horrified reactions by now. XD)
The image of the adult seal I picked was a matter of convenience (it was just the right size to post without an lj-cut), and in retrospect probably wasn't the best for making my point. I concede that that particular seal is endearing in a goofy, lumbering sort of way--like a blubbery old grandpa with no legs.
But, lo. I have more evidence forthcoming. Just you wait!
Also, you, ma'am, have a track record of being fond of bizarre, cuddly animals (see: Naked mole rat) so somehow I am not surprised.
I've always wondered that myself, but I've never really noticed just how great a contrast there is since I've never viewed them side by side. That is one seriously cute baby seal.
Those people that club baby seals are probably the same sort of people that don't like hello kitty; I think their brains weren't wired properly for the cute and fuzzy response.

Though I don't really think adult seals look half bad. I mean compared to elephant seals, they're all sleek and giant-puppy like.
