Fascinating post, will elaborate later on what I think (it's 8AM on a Saturday morning). Chinese political history is really quite interesting, except that the problem for me was that I hated learning about it in Chinese until about 11th grade. It was, like you said, a list of dates and random facts, and no actual story taught to us in CSS class. In the upper-level Chinese classes though, there was often history and literature mixed into one, ranging from ancient history to the 1960s.

P.S. 華僑 means overseas Chinese, not just American-born Chinese.
