Yes, the movie was so, so gorgeous. It was flawless in every category and it just broke my heart.

Ahh, Duplicity! A recent interview with Clive Owen and Julia Roberts really made me want to see it but I've always loved these films - the trailers make me think of the Ocean movies and whatnot. Yay! A good review for Two Lovers! I definitely need to see it now.

Glad you finally got to see The Reader. It was an excellent film, and I liked how the focus was less on whether Hanna was a good/bad person, and more about the circumstances of the situation. It would have been so easy to demonise her character for her actions in the war, and with Michael, but the film didn't do that, and I"m glad for it.

I recommend the book as well. The translation is a bit simplistic but it does a brilliant job of padding the gaps.

And you're right, the three main leads (Winslet, Cross & Fiennes) were so wonderful. Cross & Fiennes were slightly overlooked because Winslet was so fabulous but they were all excellent. You know I'm a fan of the Fiennes brothers (collective).

It's kind of like how Frost/Nixon portrayed Nixon, not so much as criminal but as a human being who made mistakes. I feel the position she was put into, which ultimately placed Michael between a rock and a hard place, was so human and painful and it definitely made the audience feel for both of them, not just Michael.

I definitely plan on picking up the book one of these days.

I remember you had a post about which brother we preferred a while back and I said I liked Joe more. However, if I had to do it again, I think I'd say Ralph which is funny because I said Joe would always be my favourite. Haha. Goes to show you how my mind works.

Personally I never looked at the situation of Hanna placing Michael in a difficult situation (in the courtroom scenario, when he knows something that can help her). The book certainly explains his actions more clearly than in the film, as in the film I was saying "acckkk, go tell someone!" and it took me longer to understand why he didn't. In the book, Michael gets to explain his actions which I found helpful.

You are right about the Nixon comparison though. I think it is a role of a very talented scriptwriter/director who can present these less than savoury characters and be able to present them to the audience in such a way that neither sympathises nor demonises.

I'm not going to argue against your Ralph decision - I do love the fan. Joe tends to stay more in the background doing smaller projects so it is natural that people know and see Ralph more often. :)

It was so human what happened to Michael and Hanna and I think the movie portrayed the conflict brilliantly because it didn't turn Hanna into a horrible criminal, but a human being who made a mistake. The audience was able to feel for both of them and I really loved the story and it just broke my heart.

I have seen Schindler's List and that was the film that first started this whole WWII EPIC EMOTIONS for me. Ever since that film, I can barely talk about the Holocaust without bursting into tears. And yes, Ralph's performance was phenomenal. I remember when we first met him and we weren't all crying yet, I was totally fangirling him and my friends had no idea who he was.

I really do think that had Milk come out sooner, it may not have changed the outcome of Prop 8, but at least open up people's minds and get them to see everything from all sides. What really got to me about Milk was the sheer frustration throughout it as well. I'm outspoken on this topic and very passionate so the film definitely hit close to home.

Sean Penn completely deserved the Best Actor win at the Oscars. His performance inspired me and affected me deeply.

I could not agree more.
