Judge Protects YouTube's Source Code, Throws Users To The Wolves

Yes, yes, I know, "meh, what do I care as long as I can still watch videos" - but thanks to Judge Louis L. Stanton in New York (that will become important later on), Viacom has now the means to get directly on the chests of ( Read more... )

Well don't you know that American law is the only law that matters?

I agree, I think it's time the judge took his adult undergarments and went home.

Over here, you get pensioned between 63 and 68, no matter what your job is. Period. No discussions. There are only exceptions if you are self-employed or if you work in a profession where there's dire lack of human resources. That goes for crafts, carpenters, for example, or milliners or whatever. Also politicians have to retire. Good thing! Nobody here understands how anybody in their sane minds would let, say, McCain become president. Politics aside, the man is *old*. Being president is a hard job. It makes no sense.

Retirement as we know it here ensures that a) people can enjoy their older age, b) young people get a job and c) those doing the jobs are on top of their trade. We had some problems here back in the 90ies, where judges had to make rulings over internet-matters who had never even used the internet. Those days are, thanks the Gods, (mostly) gone. And if I look at the decision of this judge, I think we've chosen the right way...

I would say you have, yes. I don't understand Americans. They scream about freedom for this and freedom for that and what they mostly seem to mean is freedom to be a burden on your fellow human beings. Here in Canada you have the option of continuing on in your job, but that's providing you can actually still do it. See we're not as open minded as the Americans. We like to throw in conditions. ;-)

Yet again the big guns choose to be heavy handed bully boys instead of looking at the real issues and trying to find a solution that's actually sensible. What a shock. They will never, ever learn.

Urgh, this is a subject that never fails to wind me up so bloody much.

It's just unbelievable how those multi billion dollar companies can be so short-sighted. Their target is making money. So why not sitting down and having a look at what the audience wants? Securing money in the long-term, not wasting it with such idiotic lawsuits (EMI is now after two youtube clones, btw.) or stomping on customers. It's not going to work, not in the long term.

It winds me up, as well, but even more so if I see how little people actually care. Maybe there *has* been a storm of protest on the internet, but I must have missed it. Fans seem to be comfortable with having their data exposed. Funny, that.

Understanding change is at the crux of it. *nods* And call me an ageist, but I do so wish that judges and other "servants of the public" had age limits on their offices. Some of them are just so out of date that it's laughable.

Yep, exactly. As I explained to Rattie above, people here have to retire between 63 and 68, no matter if they are car salesmen, managers, directors, street sweepers or judges. Not only can people enjoy their retirement afer many years of work thanks to their pension, this system also makes sure that knowledge passed on is kept up to date. Works pretty well. 80 year old judge? Unthinkable.
