Meta: OTW - not my umbrella plus interesting court decision regarding copyright

Jan 11, 2008 10:09

This morning, I've been visiting metafandom. I do this from time to time to see what's going on in the big bright world of fandom - fandom on LJ in general, as I'm only involved in two fandoms and therefore lame. Usually much head-desking ensues, and I hardly ever leave a comment. Seriously, if I read something like "Do we need a gender-neutral term for ( Read more... )

wtf, rant, meta, fandom

Isn't 'slash' gender-neutral anyway? I rather thought the term 'femslash' came about simply for ease of distinguishing the type of slash. O.o

But then my brain isn't fully functional so - eh.

I see it as "gender neutral" as well. The pairing makes the gender clear. I do use "femslash", though, if there is no pairing and I have to specify, in a discussion, for example. How that's in any sort anti-feminist, I don't quite understand (but then not liking the female lead in POTC is anti-feminist as well, so eh.)

Hiya! I just wanted to leave a comment on your fic 'Inventory (oh sins of our youth) Erestor writes to Elrond'.

I found it hilarious, with 'Elrond, you’re a fangrrrl.' making me grin!

Oh, and re: otw. I think you summed up my reservations with the orgainisation with There are some types of fanfiction that I personally consider to be morally wrong. Yes! There, I've said it. I'm an oppressing old prude. And I don't want to "march side by side" with the authors of those fics. I don't support them, I'm not on their side, I don't want to be under the same umbrella. Period.

Again, nice fic and thanks for making me laugh!

Hello there!

Thank you for your kind words! Woah - "Inventory" - that was actually the very first time I EVER wrote Erestor! :-D So it qualifies as a half-antique; so good to know that after all those years, it still made somebody smile. Thanks a lot for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed it. A good start into the day! :)

If you are an oppressing old prude I'm one too. One of the first fics I've read had me thinking about informing the police. I seriously thought a pervert had written that one. I didn't do it because something was not quite right. After a bit of researching I found out a 14 or 15 year old girl had written it. I hope she's seeing a doctor now otherwise I fear for her mental health.

But some adults are not better. I don't understand the attraction of unbelievable brutality.

On to something more positive. Lucky Pumuckl, no need for him to be alone any longer :)

Heh. Yes. "Its my rite 2 wright caniball incest!" The hell. Many of that stuff is illegal here, and I'm grateful for it. Some folks "grow out of it" and will probably later look at their stories with a shudder. Other become completely desensitised, and I refuse to believe that this goes absolutely without any influence on their "real lives". Where we live, censorship is not regarded as the ultimate evil, and it isn't (I don't remember if you've been around when we had the discussion about evil!Germany and evil!Switzerland being evil!Censors for not allowing neo nazis to publish their books...)

No, I haven't heard about that.

Interesting discussion you had with elfwreck. I have only one problem with her arguments. At some point my right of freedom will impact those of others. Since I believe that everyone has the same rights, we need a compromise then.

It's a known fact that things will seem ordinary much easier if we are confronted regulary with them or as you named it we will become desensitised. And there are just some things I don't want people to become desensitised to.

I've had discussion so often I can predicat all replies and comments...

To me it's illogical to give complete freedom of speech to those who use this freedom to take your freedom of speech away. It's plain stupid and not what freedom of speech was originally supposed to be. And I refuse to even get into the discussion about neo nazis. We all know where giving Hitler "freedom of speech" ended... as far as that bit is concerned, they can shove freedom of speech where the sun doesn't shine. I'd think the USA have so many problems with the government trying to take their freedom away that they shouldn't bother about ours.

Personally I think fandom is just supposed to be fun, and the moment it isn't I will be a dot on the horizon. As for the gnome I do think the right thing to do would have been to discuss the situation with the author.

As for being a big ol' meanine and stating what you don't like - you GO girl! I am not going to endure something that I am morally opposed to just so some wanker won't have a tanty. I don't like rape, pointless graphic violence, or child abuse of any kind. And I'm not going to pretend I do.

Word, word and word again.

The author is not really somebody who has great interest in talking. She stated that, as she invented the character, the copyright for the artwork portraying the character was hers as well. Which it is NOT, it's the artists. Would be like me sueing menegroth for reposting her own drawings she so kindly made for some of my fics. I'm very glad about the ruling. :)

Yes, me too. Honestly you have to wonder what some people are using for brains. Guinea pig litter I suspect.
