I'm not positive, but I believe that Wendla started wearing the long dress when the show moved to Broadway. I think the change makes sense - would her mother really have let her out of the house in that thing? *g* What did you think of the choreography?
*needs to read Spring Awakening again! and Rock 'n' Roll for the first time, for that matter*
Well, in the play her mother does, which is part of why I was puzzled...that and the pictures of the original cast where she's in the short dress for both "Word of Your Body" and "I Believe". Maybe it's just that none of the replacements are as hot as Lea Michele. XD
The choreography was pretty good-I felt it fit the show, which is always my main concern. Some numbers really impressed me, like the precision of the "Mamma Who Bore Me" reprise, when the boys marched on and set the school while the girls were rockin' out. Some of it was just strange, like the little kata-looking thing that Melchior does in "Mirror Blue Night" that recurs in "Totally Fucked". I never did quite understand that.
Is the short dress in the play that short? In the play I got the impression that it was a little bit indecent for the times, but the dress in the musical would be indecent even today. But that could be just my prudishness acting up again. ;)
The implication is that Wendla had a growth spurt over the winter, so take it as you will. She does have a line about...*looks it up*..."Oh, Mother, even children don't get diptheria in the backs of their knees!" though. And Mom says something about her being two inches taller every spring.
Heck, prude away! I wish more girls would wear "prudish" clothes-then I wouldn't have to look at all the girls who dress like Britney Spears and are built like Henry VIII.
When I saw it in NYC (which would have been... May of 07), I believe she wore the short dress all the way through Act One. I don't know when the change came about; that's puzzling.
I prefer the play too, though I really think they're trying to achieve different enough goals that it's apples and oranges, albeit apples and oranges with very similar contours.
True, because as much as the musical wants to be "controversial", it's never going to be controversial in the same way that the play was when it was first written, because the times have changed. Don't get me wrong, the musical was very good, I guess I just miss some of the more disturbing elements of the play that are changed or just don't come across the same way.
I agree. I felt like the musical's strength was in presenting an adolescent eye-view of the world; capturing how everything is DRAMATIC and IMPORTANT and UNIQUE. Because the center moves away from the controversy, I felt like the ending lacked some punch; Moritz's arc was much more emotional for me, in the musical version, whereas Melchior and Wendla's tragedy didn't affect me as much.
That said, I like both for different reasons; I just think the play is better equipped to do what it has to do, and at the end of the day, gets more accomplished.
(Also, I have no idea either on the "Mirror Blue Night" choreography. My friend and I commented on it at the time to each other. And I've apparently mis-remembered about the dress? Hm. Ah well.)
hahaha whenever someone on my f-list reviews the show, I always get shout outs =]
As for the dress, they changed it in their transfer to Broadway. The reason she still wears it in the OBC pictures is because they're all from Off-Broadway. If you look in the souvenir program thing, though, you see the actual Broadway press photos, and Wendla is wearing the long blue dress. Although, fairly recently, they did make the change from Wendla wearing the blue dress in Song of Purple Summer to her coming back in the little white one. That's one of my favorite show moments, now.
Oh, here's one for you. What did you think of Kyle as an actor? He was dreadful during his Broadway run, and I'm wondering if he's improved any. Also, were you close enough to catch some of his crazy eyebrow expressions? They're RIDICULOUS. And yeah, the show definitely lends itself better to mixed voices than full belt, which I prefer, really. I guess since it's very folk-y there isn't much room for belt.
Aaaah, that makes a little more sense. I'm glad she comes back in it now, since it's such an iconic thing it deserves to have more than one scene.
We were waaaay back in the nosebleed, so I didn't really get any eyebrows; but as far as his general acting, I though he was alright. Didn't know my socks off, but didn't make me want to die either. Kind of came off as, sorry, a bit of a prick, even toward Moritz, like he was too much more intelligent that the rest of the boys.
