Passing the Torch(wood)

This morning, motivated by the inestimable copperbadge's awesome writeup project for all of Doctor Who ever -- specifically, the the twelfth season, with a brand new Tom Baker -- I started to watch "Robot" on YouTube. My kids showed an interest, and that is how I came to have the pleasure of watching "my" Doctor with my children for the first time ( Read more... )

I shall. I'm not going to encourage them to watch a lot of Doctor Who, though. Lots of the episodes are still too scary for them. We'll take it slow.

The first episode I saw was The Sontaran Experiment.

Of course it was WTTW.

There is the problem of scary, and the problem of violent, which are not necessarily the same thing, but both are problems for the youngsters. I will be treading carefully.

Peter Davison will always be my Doctor, though David Tennant did a good job of competing for the title. :-) Boy One has recently taken up watching Eleven with us, though we suspect that much of the new series will be too intense for him, and I think we should go back and show him some Davison-era stories.

I'm rather more impressed with Matt Smith than I expected to be, though....

Classic Who is a bit less intense than Current Who, although it depends on the episode. How old is Boy One? Mine are seven (almost eight) and three. The three year old has a much higher level of tolerance for scary stuff than his sister at the same age. She's just now able, in my judgment, to watch it comfortably.

We won't be showing them any New Who for a while. I can't think of any episodes that aren't too scary/violent for them to watch.

I have been favorably impressed with Matt Smith. I really enjoyed this season, more than Tennant's last year of angsty scenery chewing. (I love me some Tennant, but still.) Some of that is liking his companions, and being glad he has two of them. The Tardis dynamic needed some shaking up.

Boy One will be twelve next week, but he's a lot like me -- he reacts poorly to horror / gore / heavy suspense on film. (We won't show him "Blink," f'rinstance, which still gives me chills.) Boy Two, at eight, would probably happily watch anything we let him, which is why we don't let him. :-)

I have a very low tolerance for scary/icky shows, too, and my daughter is the same. (Love your icon!) My son is much more comfortable with such things than she was at his age, and like you, I think that is a reason not to show him everything he wants to see. I let the two of them watch The Incredibles the other day, and then regretted giving in. I'm in no hurry to acclimatize them to scariness and violence.

Blink is a long way in the future for both of them.
