Goodbye Charles

Nov 15, 2016 21:15

At roughly 10:45am this morning, our eldest horse, Charles, was humanely euthanized.  Charles had suffered from founder before we got him, and despite our best efforts the condition only got worse over time.  In spite of a healthy appetite, he was in near-constant pain towards the end, and getting thinner all the time.  It was unlikely that he ( Read more... )

Again, I'm so sorry to hear that Charles had to gone downhill so much. Your thoughtful post completely echoes how I have felt about pets passing - with budgies they just kind of quietly go on their own - but there was one time when I wished I had put Paullie down humanely. The decision is indeed agonizing - it's never easy to be guardian of another life <3

I've only ever had one budgie, and he was over 12 years old when he stopped chirping. I never managed to teach him to talk, but he was finger-tamed and would ride around on your shoulder. I've never seen another budgie that was quite the same colour either: he was sort of a turquoise blue, with tinges of bright green and dark blue highlights. He passed one night when everyone was asleep, one of the few pet deaths I've dealt with that didn't involve euthanasia.

Probably the best was our first dog; she was getting really old and grey around the muzzle. One day she must have realized her time had come (she voided in her doghouse) and she went out to her favourite sunny patch in the yard and lay down. That's where I found her when I got home from school that afternoon. We should all be so lucky to have such a peaceful passing after a long and love-filled life.

Much sympathies. Nothing can compare to losing an old friend.

Yeah. I've had to deal with losing pets, and have had to put down cows on the farm that were almost-pets (gentle, friendly, trained to be led for shows). I get where you're at.

A song he wrote after losing a beloved pet. Another bit of advice I'd heard from the same guy: everything has a price. The price of the love of a pet, is the loss you feel when they're gone.

*hugs* I think you made some good choices, hard as they might be.
