It seems to me that I just updated this thing, yet I look back and I see that over a month has passed since the last entry! So much for more regular updates. :/

Things have been busy both at the shop and at the farm, and they will likely only get more so as the weather warms up and more and more stuff comes in. MARCH came in like the proverbial ( Read more... )

Swapping services-- how the farming world works.

Sorry to hear 'bout the problematic former employee. Hope things aren't too bad with them.

I didn't really have issues with the quality of his work - the bigger problem was that he was so SLOW... As a rule, he'd take about 3x longer to do a task than it should have, so that's where I was losing money. He had other really annoying habits like leaving his work to come see what I was talking with a customer about, and/or adding is his opinion on things when and where it wasn't needed or wanted. Basically, he couldn't really focus - which is likely why he's also messed up this issue with the EI. I just hope it doesn't come back to bite me too hard. :/

Summer students can be a blessing or a curse, depending on luck, I think. I have just been asked to take three veterinary students from Australia next winter (during their summer break) so they can learn about horse farm operations and care. They will be here for several weeks at no cost to me at all. This was arranged by a former student I gave riding lessons to many years ago who lives in Calgary and who is now 24 years old and a vet student at one of the top vet colleges in the world. We are looking forward to the experience.
