What a dichotomy between the dark violence and the uber-cute.

I vaguely remember seeing this when I was as little as those baby squirrels, but I was more interested in the cartoon rather than the story behind it.

Funny the timing behind it, since WWII was just getting started in Europe, and we were just a couple of years away from getting into it ourselves. Historically curious, indeed.

Yeah, I've seen this film before. It's a great cartoon, and well-deserving of the title of 'classic'.

Sadly, there's no WAY you could make something like this today. It would be a race to see who would murder you in your sleep first; the anti-violence groups, or the anti-religious groups. I've pointed it out to folks who say there's too much violence on TV now, as proof that their grandparents did just fine with cartoons depicting soldiers dying in mud-filled trenches.. Kids need to learn that violence leads to gruesome, nasty death.

I strongly disagree.

Even if the major studios wouldn't touch it ("How could we tie it into marketing?"), it's easier and much cheaper than it's ever been for small studios to create animation.

True, but the problem seems to be that many of the small studios are going for more and more computer-generated animation. Half of the cartoons you see today seem to have been made using FLASH. The pen-and-ink style of animation is pretty much limited to large studios who have the budget for that kind of production.

I guess that's part of why I love those old cartoons so much. :)
