Retired lesson horse in CT seeks trail buddy!

I'm looking for an adoptive home for Jasper, who is a super sweet 15 year old Quarter Horse cross gelding. His prior owner used him in a lesson program, then dumped him at an auction. I had ridden him at the Komen Ride (our barn borrowed him since we were a few horses short), so when I heard he was going to auction I went and outbid the broker so ( Read more... )

Is he bomb-proof enough for horse-savvy children? Does he like children? I have a comparable-size QH (who adores children), and am thinking about getting another QH-sized horse so I can have both children in the saddle at the same time. It would be all walk/trot and trails, maybe with some trotting poles for exercise. My main concern is his attitude toward children; my QH is happiest when surrounded by children, but my TB cross is a grumpy-guts ex-lesson horse who tends to compare children to visits from the vet.

I understand your TB completely, I don't much care for kids either. lol Jasper loves the barn kids though. He's great with them leading/grooming/handling him. I considered half-leasing him to the lesson program and keeping him long term, but he hasn't been consistently sound enough for that much work.

I only saw him spook once on trails, when a group of deer jumped out of the woods right in front of us. He gave a hop sideways, stopped, and stared. Then his brain came back and he realized the deer weren't monsters. In the indoor, he'll spook once in a while, but it's never been enough to throw me or be memorable. I'm an intermediate rider, but fairly weak physically (have rods in my back) and he's never made me feel unsafe.

Good luck, I think it's super sweet you did this! I'm no help with finding a new home though, sorry!

Thank you. I know lots of good horses fall through the cracks, but he was one I could vouch for having a really great heart. If I were wealthy I'd keep him, but I'm having to minimize bills to do some more grad school.
