Bit identification / Legality

Recently bought a horse along with his personal fittings (bridle, bit, blankets, martingale, etc.). This was partly because when we first met him, I noticed he had a bit that I'd never seen before. I live in a tack-wasteland, and I'd never be able to find something like it out here if it turned out there was a special reason he liked this one.

Ah HA that would be the wording I was looking for, thanks! And thanks for the clarification... you'd think I'd know that, since it was the USEF and EC rules I had open on my desktop, but I guess I wasn't thinking. :P EC still doesn't specify, that I can see, but mostly is the same as the US anyhow. Guess the old man needs a new bit!

Huh. Now I'm curious. Our resident saddle club farrier uses a bit like that with his colt, and he's always called it a pacifier snaffle. :P

I've heard them called that too and also seen them with little rounded "keys" on the center link for the horse to play with. They seem to be popular bits for young horses in some areas.

Possibly, I have seen them without keys before but they can be removed with a pair of wire clippers so that may be something people just chose to do???
