Vitamin E

Nov 24, 2009 18:45

Hey all!

So, my standardbred rescue came back as a weak positive for EPM. We're deciding to undergo treatment to try and nip it in the bud. My vet recommended also increasing Vitamin E in his diet with a supplement. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations in terms of brand/distributer/etc.

Thanks!

epm, supplements

The vet recommended 8000 for now. What happened to your horse? I'll look into Wal-Mart

He was stumbling a lot and falling down in the cross ties. He's retired now.

This is all to familiar to me as my mare has been on EPM treatment for 3 months now. (Thankfully she is doing great so lets hope your boy does the same!)

My mare is finiky so I went with Smartpaks SmarkE pellets and gave their recommended twice a day. It is very palatable and she loved it.
It wasnt to expensive either.

But like said above you can get the walmart/target brands. One friend even got the gel caps and put on their stallions feed. She has success with that.

Good luck with your boy!

What treatment are you using? I had a lengthy conversation with the vet earlier but more questions keep popping into my head. How bad were your mare's symptoms? I'm trying to find first hand accounts because all te medical journals are freaking me out a bit.

I am using the compounded medication with a Sulfa antibiotic and Pyrethamine antiprotozoal. You have to treat a bit longer(3-6 months) with it than the Marquis but its ALOT cheaper ( ... )

With Fritz we're doing sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine (so, basically what you are!). I just can't afford Marquis - I love Fritz, but in the end, he was only $75, a 2yr old with a pentient for accidents, and will he even be rideable at the end of all this or simply a pasture pet? I definitely don't want him to hurt or get worse, I promised him no matter what he'll live out his life, but if I can stay away from the $800/month treatments, then I'm going to ( ... )

Well, basically vitamins are vitamins. Companies just like to put fancy labels on things and make them seem "better," but honestly, vitamins are vitamins are vitamins, so if you can buy them cheap, in bulk, that's the way you should go. Offbrands FTW!
