So I bought the mustang and he's finally home- I've decided to call him Obi- short for Oberon. We're learning about things like barns, jumping standards and the pig who lives on property. I have to say how proud I am that even when he's shaking with fear he'll follow me right up to whatever he's decided is scary, at which point he huffs for a ( Read more... )

If you go to the Chronicle of the Horse forums and do a search, there's a whole thread about this practice--it's for a specific type of worm, the name of which escapes my mind right now. Anyhow, the whole idea is that the ivermectin double doses aren't toxic. Hope this helps! :)

I'd be careful about giving a mustang a heavy dose of anything. His system is not used to chemicals of any sort if he's straight from the BLM. If he has a heavy internal parasite load, you can actually do more damage by killing them off quickly than if you take it slow.

If there actually are ticks on him you can pull them off with a pair of tweezers. Grab the head and pull them off.

He's not straight from BLM (thank god- I dont have time for that level of project at the moment) He's been getting regular worming for the past three months, prior to that he was out on pasture for 9 months, in with worming for three months before that. repeat for a few years. Do you think that he would still be negatively effected by a double dose?

Anything is possible, I have no idea. I wouldn't double dose him without talking to a vet though.

Anyway, does he actually HAVE ticks? Have you seen any on him? If not the double dosing thing seems like its a moot point.

double dosing for ticks? Hmmmm thats a new one to me...But a double does of wormer will not hurt. My vet said you'd have to give them like 30 doses of regular wormer or something to actually get some sort of reaction....unless its Quest and thats is easily toxic at like 3X does or something so that should never ever be double dosed. I dont know about a wormer getting rid of ticks anyways...maybe try bio-spot or something or carefully combing through his coat to get rid of them? Or I remember awile ago seeing some sort of mite/tick dusting powder in Southern States made for horses by Farnman maybe? He looks really cute! COngrats!!
