My gelding is a similar character- decent manners so long as there's nothing exciting going on. I'll use a chain over his nose in a pinch, but I really prefer a rope halter for challenging situations. A rope halter's severity is determined by the thickness of the rope- the thinner the rope, the harsher it is. You may have to figure out what gauge of rope works best for him by trying a few different ones.

Thanks. I'll try some of my friend's rope halters and see which one works. What about the ones with the extra knots on the nose, are they worth anything?

Nope. They don't add any benefit.

Keenan/McAlister vets are excellent. They take care of all the Rutgers horses, and the owner of the horse I leased last summer uses them for her 3 horses. I know a lot of other people who really like them, so you can't go wrong with them.

Don't know anything about CCF, but the vet I'm shadowing now likes Mark Flaherty as a farrier, so that's the only farrier recommendation I could give you.

What barn are you moving to?

I'm glad to hear good things about Keenan/McAlister!

I'd rather not say the barn yet, as I haven't been officially offered the job/board, but I'll let you all know in a few days! ::excited::

I used Chester County Farriers while my horses were living at their hunter barn. Steve Teachman is EXCELLENT ( ... )

She warned me that CCF was expensive, but Galahad is a barefoot trim every 8-10 weeks Around here, trims are usually $45-$55. If they were WAY over that, I can get my farrier over there pretty easily.

I've used a rope halter with extra knots for one of my mares. She's usually a love, but she can be grouchy and the extra knots are a great attitude adjuster.

Hmmm maybe I should have tried that with my boy, too.

My OTTB tended to be rather bossy and rude if you were not firm with him, but I found that as long as I stuck to my guns and I was just very firm with him, he wasn't a problem. I wish I could suggest something further, but having not really had that issue in the past, I don't really have anything to offer. Keep us posted, though. I'm really interested to hear how you go :)

A rope halter won't be as harsh but it can pretty effective and it's a heck of a lot easier to handle. The key advantage is that it's more comfortable for him when he is behaving. They're pretty inexpensive so it's worth a try.
