#1 $400 but I work it all off mucking stalls and being barn bitch.

#2 Dosent happen too often (knock on wood) but a few hundred at least per visit

#3 My mare gets done every 6 months.... Costs of it will vary but my dentist charged me $210 the first time her teeth were done (n she was 4 and had never been floated) and only cost me $160 last time. Most of the cost goes toward seditives too.

#4 The lady I got my mare from is a farrier and she does her feet for free!! I know I am the luckiest person in the world for having this perk.

We're not very good on keeping up to date on paying our farrier bills (luckily, we have the coolest farrier around who doesn't nag us too bad about it).

...wow.

He doesn't "Nag [you] too bad" about non-payment of bills? You should count your lucky stars that he's still willing to show up and do your horses.

You should also pay the guy on time for services rendered. Wow.

well, its not like we don't pay the bills, just sometimes we end up combining the month of say, november and december into one bill. it's not that we forget, its that my dad doesn't always keep track of where he puts the bills our farrier gives us. and it's not like it happens all the time. for the most part we've gotten pretty good about it.

Thank you all for your advice it really helps! Especially with the exercise.

I was curious on board because the place I am moving to is $260/month. Large indoor, trails, round pen, 3 turn out pastures.. I can't remember how many hours a day they get turned out I have all the specs in my folder.. but basically everything is taken care of. You just have to come down and muck out stalls/clean and ride your horse. If you can't make it down that day they will muck your stall for a small fee added to board at the end of them month. When I was leasing a horse I believe the board was $350/month so I know it varies greatly and if I ever wanted to move, I want to know what to look for as far as services and prices.

We move him in on the 8th of Feb so I'll get pics as soon as I can!! I'm so excited lol

6- Would you consider having him live out 24/7? I think it's pretty rare for more time outside to be detrimental to most horses (so long as appropriate decisions regarding shelter/blanketing/fencing/pasturemates/etc are made).

He loves being outside so it's an option. I'd have to ask my barn owner though & see what she says. I'm going down Sunday to turn in my paperwork.. but I am *almost* positive living out 24/7 isn't an option.. Hmm

As a sidenote- I'd make an educated decision regarding lunging your horse to get him fit. While there certainly are some benefits to lunging (when done properly), plain old running him in circles will more than likely do more harm than good.

Additionally, if you're going from a lesson once or twice a week to riding regularly, it'll probably be in your favor to start riding him while he's not quite fit- if he's in shape and has all sorts of strength and endurance while you're still getting into the swing of riding more than once or twice a week, you're likely to get yourself in over your head.

For the most part, the majority of his exercise will be from me riding him & I will get lessons for myself with a trainer to get ME back into condition since I have had so much time off my position is crap lol. He just fat and I'd like him to loose some of that fat weight.

His previous owner recommended light riding a few times a week until I get back into the swing of things and then go from there.

1. australia. $280/month. horse is on about a half acre 'sand yard' and then is let out onto about a quarter acre 'paddock' during the day. 'paddocks' are rotated (theoretically). 'sand yard' has tin lean-to/shed. we don't have extreme cold here, but we do have ridiculous heat. i pay ALL feed & mix feeds - property owner chucks his breaky in in the morning & i go and feed dinner. if i can't make it i arrange for them to feed or my friend feeds for me ( ... )

I totally agree with 5. "Walking" doesn't have to mean "wandering around in circles." Look into walking circles and patterns and things that will help your horse get his butt under him and work all of his muscles. Walk over poles, or around cones... it'll help you two get in tune to each other, too, and work out any kinks you might have together.
