Worming After Riding?

Oct 04, 2008 19:57

I've always believed that a horse should not be worked on worming day. I really want to ride Linus tomorrow, but he also needs to be wormed. Would it be ok to ride him, then worm him after he's cooled down? Or should I just scrap riding (I was hoping to call a friend and go for a trail ride, we usually spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours in the woods) and ( Read more... )

health/medical issues, deworming

I've never heard that before, and no where where I've worked have they held off riding on worming day. Interesting. Is that just to not add to the supposed stress of the meds?

I'd heard that it helps prevent colic. Just like I always worm in the morning, in case of colic someone will actually see a horse in distress.

I never believed that there was anything wrong with riding after worming... until the day I wormed my horse (in the morning, with pyrantel pamoate) and then rode him (in the evening) and he coliced badly and had to get shipped to New England Equine (where he spent 4 days and was really close to needing surgery).

Now, I have no idea whether it had anything to do with the wormer or not... it could have totally been a coincidence, but ever since I have given him the day off when worming, just to be safe.

I've heard of people worming after cooling them out completely and then giving them the next day off.

I think if you ride first and then give him a lot of time to cool down you shouldn't have a problem.

That's what a friend of mine said as well.

Thanks

The vet at my barn gives the wormer via an N/G tube and advises the borders not to ride that day.
I'd give him the day off, just to be on the safe side.

But wouldn't that be just because the nasal passages might be irritated from the tube? If the OP worms orally, it wouldn't be a problem.

That is also a good possibility. I worm orally as well and I give Matt the day off. I think it could also just be personal preference.

I wouldn't hold of riding personally, but if I took any precaution, I would just not ride hard... but I have ridden and wormed taco on the same day more often then not... I just don't sweat him up...we take an easy walk jog ride...

We're planning a nice, leisurely trek through the woods.
