New horse?

Back story
I have been searching for a project horse for quite a while. I came across One Sock. I contacted the owners and after meeting them they said they would be willing to give me One Sock (they can't afford to keep six horses with the price of hay/the drought) if I would be willing to free lease her (I can take her to my barn) for 6 months ( Read more... )

Given the way you describe her personality, I say the good outweights the bad. You can't put a price on good minds and/or personalities. And for free, it sounds like it's probably a good deal.

That's what I am thinking, also. Of course, if something comes up in the vet check that is major, I'll be passing. So far, so good though!

Thank you!

she's downhill w/a long back, parked under herself and her RF looks wonky. but you're just riding her, right, not breeding her? she looks perfectly fine for that. my mare has more confo flaws than that and she's fine. :)

Oh hell no I'm not breeding her! She has good bloodlines, which I like because it means I know where she came from and can look into what her lineage has done, but I have no interest in breeding her. Strictly a riding poneh!

And, thanks for the critique!

I like her. She stands under herself in the hind end, but she's got what looks like nice hocks and a very nice hip. Her neck is upside down, but more work and having her carry herself correctly will help that.
Her back looks incredibly long in all the pictures, so it's even more important that she learns how to use those back and stomach muscles or else she is going to have a major sway when she ages. I always find long backed horses have a smoother gait but much less power overall. Her shoulder is decent ( ... )

The contract is a good one and there is a clause that states they cannot take the horse away unless there is provable neglect that is confirmed by a third party vet.

I do think her neck will improve with work, as will her back. I'm pretty strict about developing good back muscles (because they're super important no matter what), so hopefully her back will never be an issue.

The next time I see her I'll get someone to hold her and set her up correctly so I can take good photos. The angles just sucked ass. x_x

Thank you!

I'd much rather have a green horse that freezes than one who freaks out. lol

I'd be wary of this though - sounds like you get to train their horse for free, then give it back in six months so they can sell it to someone else.

There is a clause in the lease that states they cannot take the horse back unless neglect is proven by a third party vet. Trust me, I've thought of that, too!

And yeah, I'd rather have a horse that won't go than with too much go!

so, is she just for you to play around with? or are you getting option to buy at the end of the 6months?

Both!

They seem to really care about their horses and want to make sure she goes to a good home, one they can check in on, before she's sold. I can respect that.
