unilateral exercises and the case of the funky withers

I have been riding this mare Rose for almost a year now and she has been coming along quite well. When we first started she definitely had a "good" way and a "bad" way. Her "good way was going left and she would drop her shoulder and bulge going right. That VASTLY improved after a few months of steady work. Honestly, these days I would consider her ( Read more... )

My mare has broken withers. She is amazing athlete despite her back looks a little strange and she has uneven shoulders. The key to keeping her happy is saddle fit. I ride in a county that is fitted by a master saddle fitter every 3 months or so. This pad has also helped us immensely!

I long line her to let her balance herself without having to fight a rider. Make sure and experienced person does the long lining.

that pad looks perfect! long lining might help as well. the weird thing is I've had many horses ome through here with horrible balance, young, out of work, etc. this mare GOES quite quite well despite looking like she should be a trainwreck!!!

Horses are amazing animals. Onyx does just fine with her broken withers. She also has bone fragments in her hip. I have x-rays and she is sound. People always stare when I take her saddle off. Good luck with your mare.

Mattes also makes a similar pad but I think they're more expensive. If you go for the ThinLine, definitely buy it through them directly...they have the regular pads for $64 and Dover wanted $95.

At the bottom of the page you'll find the Prolite Adjustable Front Riser. You can add shims to either of the front pockets (for your situation, just the "low" side needs fill. These saddle pads are AH-MAY-ZING (I just wrote about them in my blog: http://12to15steps.livejournal.com/47613.html.

Mine just arrived and of course I played with all the shims.
