You should really be talking to your barn manager about this. It is hard for someone on the internet to make a good suggestion as far as product goes because which product is more effective depends on time of year and your area of the world.

It is more effective when every horse in the barn is de-wormed using the same product on the same day. It is also important to rotate chemicals. If your barn manager does not have such a program in effect, borrow one from a local barn, or ideally, have your vet do a fecal count and make a plan customized to your horse's needs.

My yard does have a routine, all of my BO's horses and one or two others get wormed together, I haven't really been there long enough to get into the routine yet, and my BO injects her wormer so for insurance reasons she can only do hers, I wasn't really asking for advice and such, it was more oppinions, I like to hear about what other people do, but thanks for the comment.

Our barn deworms every eight weeks, and all the horses get the same type of dewormer within the same day. Otherwise, it's not as effective.

Ivermectin is good, rotated out with the Zimecterin Gold/Equimax/whatever that does tapeworms, and a Strongid seasonally too.

Cool thanks, I didn't know for a long time (Before I got my horse!) that you had to rotate wormers, makes alot of sense though...

The last barn dewormed every 8 weeks and they only did ivermectin. I'm now doing my own wormers, et al, and I still do it every 8 weeks but I rotate.

I use this chart as a basic guide, although I'm adjusting based on what the other boarders do. There are only about 8 horses on the property, and each has their own paddock which rarely gets rotated.

As to which brands... Usually it's whatever I get free from work, or the cheapest carried by my supplement dealer. As long as the formulas are the same (between brands) I don't think there's really much of a difference.

Ah, I should mention I use the 3-way rotation on that chart.

I thought that you had to rotate chemicals or else it didn't work after the first dose, am I right?

That chart is a bit confusing, I found one last night that is very easy to follow: http://www.alphahorse.com/worming-schedule.html, I'm gonna try this one and see how it works out

I do rotate chemicals now. The other barn, I had no control over the worming, and really didn't know better for the longest time. Ivermectin supposedly has not been shown to cause resistance, but I still wouldn't chose to do it that way.

The chart from SmartPak shows rotating oxibendazole/fenbendazole, ivermectin, and pyrantel pamoate, so that you do each one twice a year. My own schedule varies slightly, although I never use the same chemical twice in a row.

What I meant by formulas between the brands, is two different brands still have the same chemical, but one might be a lot cheaper. IverCare and Zimectrin both have 1.87% ivermectin, but you can find a generic brand with the same for half the price. It doesn't do any good rotating from IverCare to Zimectrin, but IverCare to Strongid is a different story.
