Feeling proud

Feb 24, 2008 11:54

So, a little background before I tell you why cantering in my lessons these past two weeks made me so purely happy. Because just said like that, it sounds pretty ordinary, like "Whee, zomg u guys, I CANTEREDED today." But it means a lot to me.

And why? )

dressage, personal: riding update, confidence issues, cantering

aw, yay! i know so well what it feels like to conquer a fear like that. i have been afraid of my own horse for a long time. she is very forward and spooky and has given me a few bad spills. but my coach right now is so great. she pushes me to do things i would never do on my own.

a few weeks ago, she started making me ride without reins. now, this is TERRIFYING for me, with my horse, i depend on my reins as breaks way too much. so when she asked me to canter without reins, i literally started crying, and she was like "dont think about it, just do it." so i did and it was the BEST canter i've ever gotten out of my pony. and it felt so good because this was such a huge accomplishment for me. i started crying AGAIN only this time it was because i was just so happy and proud of us.

I was the same way with jumping for a while. I could ride any horse in the barn and w/t/c and jump them in the arena but my instructor switched horses on me when we went to do some XC one day and I freaked out and didn't want to jump anything. It was completely irrational but after she pretty much bullied me into going over at least something (dismounted, grabbed my horse's reins and had us trot over it) I was fine.

Yay for you! I totally understand, it took me almost a year to work back up to a decent canter in lessons when I restarted riding but once I did it was like, OMG, I can RIDE. I'm still terrified of galloping or jumping or cantering on my own (green-broke) horse instead of the Trakehner schoolmaster I've been riding -- but I'll get there.

This may be a dumb question, but I'd rather sound foolish here on the internet than out in the real world... How do you pronounce "Trakehner"? I've always wondered, but never really figured it out.

I believe it's trah-kay-nerr, with the accent on the second syllable. Correct me if I'm wrong?

LOL! I don't blame you, I wasn't sure either until I started riding one. It's one of those words you read in a book but if you never hear it said, you're not sure.

Anyways, it's like trauh-KAY-nor or track-EH-ner. Eh like the Canadian EH. :) When he's falling heavy on the forehand, I call him the truck-KAY-ner. ;)
