Mary Sue is essentially "self-insert" or thinly veiled author insert fic. So, I write a story about an idealized version of myself as an original character in a fanfic, and everyone goes "omg, what a Mary Sue!" Signs of being a Mary Sue include: being related to the main characters (daughter of, etc.), everyone falls in love with her, she is astoundingly beautiful, and in the original version, dies to save everyone else so can be mourned. Mary Sue gets her name from an early Star Trek story about Lt. Mary Sue
